Phil Collins: I can't retire!

Phil Collins thinks it's nearly impossible to retire when your songs are still played on the radio. The British rocker enjoyed solo success and also musical acclaim with his band Genesis, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
Phil Collins thinks it's nearly impossible to retire when your songs are still played on the radio.

The British rocker enjoyed solo success and also musical acclaim with his band Genesis, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Phil has declared that he has retired on numerous occasions, however he often finds himself performing again.

"I did the First Final Farewell tour and said goodbye at the end of show. My son Matthew was born that year and I was going to go home and be dad and then, of course, I get divorced. And then I was persuaded to go out and do a Genesis reunion to put the lid on that, which I did," Phil recalled to British magazine Q.

"In the documentary you hear me say, 'I'll do a month of shows here and a month of shows there but I'm not going out like we used to.' And the agent's trying to say, 'Suppose you get three nights...' and I said, 'Don't f**k with me, I don't really want to be doing this, but I'll do it.' And we had a great time. As far as I'm concerned, I have retired. But it's hard to retire when they're playing the songs on the radio."

While Phil has amassed fans around the globe for his anthems, the hip-hop community also regard him as a huge influence.

Ice-T is a big fan of the 63-year-old, though Phil is hard pressed when it comes to naming his top music stars.

"Oh, I don't know. I don't listen to music, which is strange. Obviously. I'm not interested in what other people are doing. There are things you hear - I like that song Happy by Pharrell [Williams], I think it's a great groove and he's a very smart guy. But that like, top of the pile," he admitted.
