Madonna: I don't know One Direction

One Direction may be conquering charts worldwide ' but Madonna has no idea who they are.
One Direction may be conquering charts worldwide ' but Madonna has no idea who they are.

The boy band recently made music history by becoming the first British group to top the US charts with their debut album, Up All Night. They have attracted a host of famous fans including Katy Perry, Rihanna and the US First Lady Michelle Obama. However, Madonna appeared oblivious to the hysteria surrounding the five-piece during a TV interview.

When asked if she enjoys One Direction's music, Madonna looked unsure.

"That's a pop group, right? Sorry," the 53-year-old star replied to UK TV show Daybreak.

When it was confirmed that they are one of the biggest groups in the world at the moment, she added, "I haven't seen them yet, no, sorry. Slap my hand."

While Madonna may not be aware of One Direction, there is another British act she is fond of.

The music superstar was full of praise for Adele ' who has also enjoyed chart success and swept the boards at awards ceremonies with her latest album 21.

Madonna revealed she is eager to collaborate with the 23-year-old.

"I would love to. I would love to meet her, I think she's brilliant, I love her," she explained, before revealing she had wanted Adele to join her for her performance at the Super Bowl earlier this year.

"I think she was having her throat problem or throat operation or something."

Madonna was then quizzed on whether she would consider joining the judging panel for a TV talent show.

Stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Rowland, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Nicole Scherzinger have all appeared on shows searching for new musical talent ' with Britney Spears set to be confirmed as a new judge on the US version of The X Factor.

While many of her peers have turned mentors on shows like The Voice and American Idol, Madonna has no interest in following in their footsteps.

"I haven't really thought about it to tell you truth and I've never actually seen any of those shows - I don't watch television,' she added. 'And the contests, well everybody's a bit contest obsessed. I don't actually like the idea of being a judge. It's so subjective - like what's good and what isn't?"
