Britney Spears in running for new prize
Britney Spears has been nominated for a new MTV award.

The superstar singer will go head to head with four other nominees for the Worldwide Act prize at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs).

The five short-listed acts must compete in one last round of voting to win the accolade.

Also in the running for the award is Lena from Europe, BIGBANG from Asia Pacific, Abdelfattah Grini from Africa/India/Middle East, and Restart from Latin America. Britney has been recognised in the North America region.

Fans can vote for their favourite act at www.mtvema.com until November 4.

The new accolade aims to recognise music from all corners of the world and celebrate diversity in the industry. These five acts were chosen by MTV viewers across the globe, who voted for their favourite 'hometown artists'.

The winner will be announced at the EMAs show on November 6.

Teen star Selena Gomez is hosting the event in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Lady Gaga has been nominated for six prizes this year.

The flamboyant singer is up for several of the biggest accolades of the ceremony, including Best Song, Best Live and Best Pop.
